Tribal Members Celebrate 19th Anniversary of Casino

Friday, October 9th, eight students and three staff members from South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, had narrated tours of the Tribal offices and Tribal programs. Myrna Weston, tribal elder, gave the students and staff a historical overview of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. The Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center hosted a visit with the group also. The students brought down prizes to play Bingo with the elders. The students ate lunch with the elders and visited and shared information with elders. The lunch was hominy soup, chili, fry bread and wojapi which were a “hit” with the students.

Carol Robertson gave the group a tour of the Tribal Offices, Randall Eagle Shield, Department of Natural Resources and Cynthia Johansson, FSST Tribal Courts and Art Schmidt, Buffalo Program/Land lease Director took the group into the field to get up close to the buffalo herd.

The group took lots of pictures of the buffalo and enjoyed being very close to buffalo bulls for great pictures. The group went to the Boy’s & Girl’s Club at the public schools and an evening dinner was enjoyed at Royal River Casino. The purpose for the group of students making this visit was to educate them about the work of the tribal programs.

Dianne Nagy, Office for Diversity Enhancement, Brookings, SD had made arrangements with the FSST Education Department staff for a “day with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.” Saturday, October 10th, the group from SDSU spent the day at Flandreau Indian School.-Editor
