Michelle Miller, Field Training Officer for the Casino Security staff and an employee since 2001, organized a fire extinguisher training session in November for casino staff. The departments that attended the hands-on training were: hotel, security, and tribal employees, thirty-five participants attended the one day training that consisted of a video on types of fire extinguishers, and two 1 ½ hour classes and then went outside to put out the fires.
There was a pan fire and a hotel bed fire to extinguish. Ms. Miller stated: “Some of our employees said they never have used a fire extinguisher so we had training for this. We discovered the mattresses from the casino motel were fire resistant and had fire retardant make up. We just started having fire extinguisher training for the various types of extinguishers and the Security Department checks the casino/hotel extinguishers once a month. If there was ever a fire in the facilities at the casino, it is a joint effort between the security department and the fire department. We would call the fire department and try to extinguish it before they arrive or cancel the fire department if the fire was put out. But it would be better to have them on hand to assess the fire and smoke damage any how in most cases.”
Futu re plans for more safety training will be Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training for the Security Department using both books and equipment. Ms. Miller stated: “This will be open to the public and we will have a count taken of those interested in taking the CPR classes, and this will be open to the public. I want to include CPR training for emergency use on a child.” The next training for the staff and the casino and motel will be in March of 2008.-editor |
