On Friday March 26th FSST Tribal Member Officer Stephan Nelson graduated from his mandatory South Dakota Law Enforcement – Twelve Week Basic Certification Course – 104th Session.
Officer Stephan Nelson was sworn in on March 10th, 2009 by the Honorable Judge Sherman Marshall as a Flandreau Police Department Officer, since then he had twelve months to be subject to various background checks before he was scheduled to attend the certification course.
Although twelve weeks of training may not seem long it is filled with different types of training courses such as; self defense, first aid, suspect apprehension, interrogation techniques, civilian rights and an overview of the criminal justice system. Other necessary training includes identification of weapons and suspicious behavior, police equipment usa ge (batons, walkie-talkies, law enforcement vehicles, handcuffs, etc.), how to fill out and submit police reports, knowledge of police terminology and fire safety. Not to forget the drug screening, criminal and credit background checks.
Attending the Graduating ceremony to support Officer Nelson was his fiancée Rosalie Ruelas and their newborn son Estephan De Angelo Nelson, Officer Nelson’s daughter Morgan, his proud mother Cynthia Weddell with stepfather Jim Weddell, and siblings Brock Nelson and Desiree Nelson.
This was a great day for Officer’s Nelsons family to celebrate his impressive accomplishment.
