FSST Health Clinic Hosts Health Fair

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Health Clinic hosted a Health Fair on April 7th, 2011.  The Health Fair was from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Royal Room, Royal River Casino.

There were a variety of booths and vendors as well as experts to answer questions related to health issues such as cancer, diabetes, massage therapy and more.  There were booths from Tribal Programs such as Natural Resources, Diabetes Program, Dental Department, Contract Health, Community Health Representatives (CHR) and the Flandreau Emergency Medical Team had a booth.  There were drawing for door prizes donated by the clinic and prizes from vendors with booths. 

The Northern Plains Cancer Coalition-Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board, Rapid City, SD, was there with information.  Karen Workman, Program Manager, and Mary Reiner, Outreach Coordinator gave out information about the Northern Plains Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.

Department of Veterans Affairs, Sioux Falls office, Minnesota West Technical College, were on hand for education and benefits information.  There were several vendors for jewelry, cosmetics, and crafts. The theme for the health fair was to balance wellness spiritually, physically and mentally. 

Grant McAdaragh was the emcee, Scott Anderson and Tom Allen, Jr., Gordon Weston Indian Veterans Post, carried the eagle staffs and Tom had the prayer/blessing.  The Royal River Casino provided ice tea, water, coffee and crackers & cheese, fruit and meat snack trays.

Entertainment was provided by the Flandreau Indian School Dance Club, advisors are Ron & Lillian Good Eagle.  Ron explained to the audience the jingle dress dance, traditional dancers and drummers.

In attendance at the Health Fair were Congressional Staff members for Senator Thune, Jeannie Hovland, Native American Outreach Coordinator, intern Michelle Smith, Senator Thune’s office, Sioux Falls and  Courtney Heitkamp, Watertown,  of SD Representative Kristi Noem’s staff.
