Dakota Coalition Historic Preservation Training/Conference Held at

Royal River Casino

         

FSST Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) JB Weston and consultant/grant writer Franky Jackson hosted a Dakota NAGPRA Coalition (Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act) Conference at the Royal River Casino January 17-18, 2012.  There was an awards banquet on the evening of January 17th.  Fifteen individuals from the Dakota Tribes of NE, MN and SD were awarded a plaque and Native American designed blanket. American Indian Veterans Meeting With Senator Thune's Staff

                   

Jeannie Hovland, Tribal Affairs Advisor, US Senator John Thune’s Sioux Falls Office, visited with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and programs on January 26th.  Sam Allen requested Jeannie to meet with him and Roger Trudell, Chairman of the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska, Francis Wakeman, Jr., Gordon Weston Indian Veterans Post. Sam is the First Commander for the Gordon Weston Indian Post.(more...)

Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center Provides Thanksgiving Dinner

FSST Employee Christmas Party

                     

On December 9th, tribal employees were treated to a meal, Wal-Mart gift card and cash of $100 from the FSST Executive Committee.  Elizabeth Wakeman, Director of the FSST Brownfield’s Program, donated a t-shirt with FSST logo to every employee. (more...)

Dakota 38 Memorial Horse Ride

                                

The 7th Year of the Dakota 38 Wokiksuye Memorial Horse Ride is taking place, and the dream of prayer, healing and forgiveness for riders, communities and nations continues.  Friends, allies and volunteers are invited to help in whatever way they can, such as: Hay and feed for horses, lodging, fuel and cooks to provide meals along the route. A farewell dinner was held for Dawn Bucher, Certified Nurse Practitioner, on December 14th at Eastman Hall from 5-7p.m. Friends, staff and patients of Dawn’s gathered for an evening meal catered from Hy-Vee Stores, Brookings, SD. (more...)

Sid Byrd Celebrates 93rd Birthday

On Monday night, December 19th, Sid Bryd’s 93rd Birthday was celebrated with a Birthday Potluck Dinner at Eastman Hall from 6 - 9 p.m.  The event was hosted by his children Sam Byrd, Pam Byrd, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  There was live entertainment and games and prizes for kids and adults.(more...)

Farewell Lunch for Grant McAdaraugh

A Farewell Lunch was held for Grant McAdaragh at the FSST Health Clinic on December 19, 2011.  Grant had been with the Tribe as Diabetes Program Director for nine years and resigned to take another position at Brookings Hospital. He will be employed within the IT Department to make possible the sharing of information with Avera McKennan Hospital and patient diagnosis via computer technology.(more...)

Royal River Casino's 21st Anniversary Tribal Member Appreciation Dinner

Friday, October 21th the Royal River Casino celebrated the 21th Anniversary of being the first Tribe in South Dakota to open a casino/gaming business.  The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal members were treated to an evening of dining and entertainment. (more...)

Two students at Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Pipestone Campus received scholarships from the Dakota Indian Foundation.  Nicoles Ross is in the Accounting A.A.S., Business Management A.S., and Business Management with Computer Emphasis A.S. Doc "deeply humbled"by South Dakota Hall of Fame honor

Ameil “Doc” Redfish has lived a good and honorable life already, and is still going strong as mayor of Arlington, and as a “semi-retired” PA, who still seems to be working long hours.

It has been such an “honor-able” life, as a matter of fact, that he has been cleaning up on honors of late, with people and organizations able to honor him in what seems to be monthly “Docapalooza” recognition events. (more...)

Cindy Woolston Interprets for Deaf Football Player

Cindy (Hovland) Woolston, is employed  with Sheridan, Wyoming Public Schools as a certified interpreter  and licensed through the Wyoming State Department of Education. She also teaches American Sign Language (ASL) to Junior High School students and has an active “Sign Club.”  (more...)

Lillian Beane celebrates 100th Birthday

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe sponsored a celebration for the 100th Birthday for tribal member Lillian Beane. A reception was held in her honor August 25th, 2011 at the Royal River Casino’s Royal Room.  Lillian Moore Beane is the Tribe’s very own “centenarian.” (more...)

Clifford Allen Memorial

On Friday, August 26th, at Eastman Hall, the family, relatives and friends of Clifford Allen,hosted a Memorial for their brother, uncle, cousin and friend.  The memorial was from 5pm to 7pm.  Clifford’s sisters, sister-in-laws and cousins prepared a huge feast featuring some of Clifford’s favorite foods. Clifford was a great cook and his specialty was cooking taniga (tripe) and posole (hominy) soup.  (more...)

Grace Moore Senior Citizens Picnic

                    

The Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center’s staff and volunteers hosted the 6th Annual Summer Picnic at 5 pm , August 24th, at the Wally Koester Pavillion, Moody County 4-H Fair Grounds.  The weather was perfect for being outside, warm, not humid at all, breezy and lots of sunshine.(more...)

49th Annual Mdewakanton Wacipi on July 15th - 17th, 2011

The 49th Annual Mdewankanton Wacipi sponsored by the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe was held on July 15th – 17th , at the Pow Wow grounds north of town. 

The Tribal Maintenance Department and the FSST Buffalo/Land Management Department were in charge preparing the Pow Wow Grounds after the unusually heavy rains and tornado that that pasted through town on July 1st.  (more...)

FSST 16th Annual Wacipi Walk/Run

On July 16th, the FSST Wellness Center, Brownsfield Program and FSST sponsored the 16th Annual Wacipi Walk/ Run.  Registration started at 8:15 am to 8:45 am in front of the bowling alley with the events starting at 9:00 am.  There was a 9k and 1,2, or 3 mile fun walk run event.  (more...)

Lillian Moore Beane

The daughter of Oliver Moore and Grace Eastman Moore, Lillian was born on August 27th, 1911 in her grandfather Rev. John Eastman’s home at Agency Village on the Sisseton Reservation, South Dakota.  Rev. Eastman had been called to serve the Goodwill Presbyterian Church in 1906, after serving as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Flandreau for 30 years. (more...)

FSST Employee Appreciation Day

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe’s Employees were treated to a day of appreciation with a picnic meal at the Rivers Bend Country Club on Friday, June 10th.  The employees enjoyed a picnic meal prepared by the Country Club: brauts, hot dogs, hamburgers and bar-b-que ribs, potato salad, baked beans, pasta salad, potato chips and pitchers of soft drinks. (more...)

Boarding School Days by Sid Bryd

I attended Genoa Indian School in east central Nebraska from 1927 until it was permanently closed in the spring of 1934.  During my first three years I was also the smallest boy on campus and probably the youngest at age six.  During those initial years I was not permitted to return home on the reservation.  It was like being exiled from home, loved ones, and familiar surroundings.  It was almost as if I had been given a sentence of death! JOM Student Honoring Ceremony

Saturday, May 14th 2011, at Eastman Hall the Johnson O’Malley (JOM) committee hosted the 5th Grade Honoring, 8th Grade Honoring and Senior Feather Honoring Ceremony.  Grand Entry began with the drum group:  Perry Bobtail Bear, Jim Bill Ross, Everett Weston, Francis Eastman, Brian Thin Elk, and James Crawford while Tom Allen Jr. of the Gordon Weston Indian Veterans Post presented The 38 Eagle Staff. Guard, Native communities gather to welcome new choppers

As 600 people gathered at Crazy Horse in a mix of Army issued camouflage and traditional Sioux regalia Sunday, it was clear more was being celebrated than a helicopter.

The ceremony in view of the famous Lakota chief Crazy Horse brought together representatives from four South Dakota tribes, National Guardsmen and veterans to commemorate the arrival of new light-utility helicopters named in honor of the Lakota nation.

         FSST Health Clinic Hosts Health Fair

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Health Clinic hosted a Health Fair on April 7th, 2011.  The Health Fair was from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Royal Room, Royal River Casino.

Meet Courtney Heitkamp from Congresswoman Kristi Noem's Office

Courtney Heitkamp will serve as East River Constituent Services Representative out of the Sioux Falls office, serving the greater Southeast area.  Heitkamp will be responsible for handling constituent casework and maintain working relationships with various agencies across the state of South Dakota. Native American Studies Gain Support

A lack of a Native American studies program at this university hasn’t stopped some students from learning the Lakota language.  “Learn how to spit out a loogie,” William Underbaggage told students yesterday afternoon, describing how to pronounce “tunkashila” — or grandfather — in the proper guttural method. My Grampa

When I was little my grampa (Conrad Rederth) came to Egypt to see me.  He picked me up and brot me presehts. My grampa was very toll.  He was wrilly nice and I wrilly love him.  When I was biger I came and visit ad grampas home in South Dakota. (more...)
