FSST Employee Picnic

Thursday June 17th the FSST Employees & Families gathered at the City Park for their annual Employee Picnic hosted by the planning committee: Deb Wakeman, Shelli Marshall, Doreen Bird, Charlie Wasson, Celeste Homomichl, Adele Davis, and Eric Anderson.   A delicious barbeque dinner of chicken, ribs, coleslaw, baked beans, and cornbread was catered by Famous Dave’s much to of the enjoyment of the employees.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day Services were held at the First Presbyterian Church on May 31st, Services were led by newly commissioned Lay Pastor Paula Armstrong for the First Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. Sid Byrd (Ret).  The services began with a recording of the National Anthem, followed by a reading of the poem

Jerome Kills Small - USD Instructor for Daktoa Language at FSST

Dakota Language Preservation classes were started again June 14th at Eastman Hall. The Dakota Language Preservation Committee met with Jerome Kills Small on June 10th at the FSST Higher Education offices.  The FSST Executive Committee approved the hiring of Dakota/Lakota/Nakota Language instructor Jerome Kills Small.

CHIPRA Conference at RRC

Tresa Knoff FSST Clinic Contract Health Administrator, and Julie Wood FSST Patient Benefits Coordinator hosted a conference on June 7th – 9th, 2010 at the Royal River Casino “AKU LA CHIPRA PROJECT” in celebration of the FSST Clinic being one of the recipients of the CHIPRA (Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorizations Act)

Father's Day Banquet hosted by the Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center

The Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center (GMSCC) hosted a Father’s Day Banquet to honor all Fathers & Sons at noon, Friday June 18th. Sara DeClerk – GMSCC Director, Sally Allen – cook & Helen Thompson- cook provided a meal of 3 different meats, Roast Beef, Ham & Turkey, real mashed potatoes with fresh gravy, glazed carrots and deviled eggs, homemade split top butter loaf bread and pumpkin pie for dessert. Mothers Day Celebration at Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center

                       

The Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center staff hosted a “Happy Mother’s Day Celebration 2010" on Friday, May 7th at 11:00 a.m.  Sara DeClerk-Director, Sally Allen-Cook and Helena Thompson-volunteer, prepared a wonderful Tea Luncheon for Tribal elders to celebrate Mothers Day early. (more...)

Family Hosts Reception in Honor of

Gordon Jones, Sr.

                 

The family of the late Gordon Jones, Sr. hosted a Congressional Record Tribute & Reception on Friday, April 30th, from 3pm to 5pm at the Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center.  Senator John Thune (R), SD, submitted a Congressional Record in honor of Gordon Jones, Sr. for his years of civic and public service. Jeannie Faber, Native American Outreach Coordinator for Senator John Thune, represented the senator and relayed the Senator’s message to the family.  (more...)

Rabies Vaccinations

Friday, May 7th 2010 at the FSST Natural Resources Department & Land Management offices, rabies vaccinations were administered by Dr. Steve Wilson USDA veterinarian, and assisted by Martin Stephens Lt. U.S. Public Health Service. (more..)

18th Annual Healthy Start Spring Wacipi

Saturday, April 24th the 18th Annual Healthy Start Spring Wacipi was held at the Flandreau Community Center & Armory.  The Annual Healthy Start Spring Wacipi’s goal is to celebrate the new lives of the past year.

Governor Recognizes Arlington for Achievements in Economic Development

                        

Mayor of Arlington, SD, Ameil Red Fish accepted an award from Governor rounds on April 20, 2010 on behalf of the community of Arlington, SD.  Mr. Red Fish is a Physicians Assistant working at the tribal clinic in Flandreau, where he also provides excellent health care for our patients!

Dawn Bucher enjoys a wide, interesting career in medicine

Dawn Bucher grew up on a farm northwest of Pipestone, MN and received her education at Pipestone Public Schools where she graduated.  A divorced mother of two children, Dawn had a tough going of it in her early years she said, since she didn’t have much money and had to live frugally.  Realizing that she had to build a life for herself, Dawn obtained employment at Bayliner Boat Factory in Pipestone where she performed a variety of duties.  (more...)

        Wholeness Center Receives Vehicle

                    

Royal River Casino & Hotel and the Wholeness Center team up once again. The donation of a vehicle from the Royal River Casino & Hotel to the Wholeness Center and C.A.R.E. Center will be used for providing clients with emergency transportation, client transports and for transporting children to and from the C.A.R.E. Officer Stephan Nelson graduates from Police Academy

                     

On Friday March 26th FSST Tribal Member Officer Stephan Nelson graduated from his mandatory South Dakota Law Enforcement - Twelve Week Basic Certification Course - 104th Session.  Officer Stephan Nelson was sworn in on March 10th, 2009 by the Honorable Judge Sherman Marshall as a Flandreau Police Department Officer.   (more...)

SD Highway 34 Reconstruction Project

South Dakota Highway 13 Reconstruction Project from Moody County 11 to the Minnesota State Line will begin April 5th through approximately September 15th.  Traffic will be detoured to Moody County Highway 11, 8C and 17.  There will be a short closure on SD Highway 34 to reconstruct the east mile of South Dakota Highway 34 next to the Minnesota Border starting July 7th through September 1st. During this work traffic will be detoured from SD Hwy 34 to Interstate 29, Moody County Highway 14, Pipestone County Highway 2 and Minnesota Hwy 23.  (more..)

Blizzards hit the Flandreau Santee Sioux  Reservation

              

“Let it snow” seemed to be the mantra for 2010 so far, along with let it rain and let it sleet as well.

  The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal community spent the majority of  January snowed in and digging out.  With the numerous blizzards, ground blizzards, rain, sleet, and wind advisories the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Offices were closed (more...)

Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Christmas     Party

               

Friday, December 4th, 2009 11:30 a.m. at Eastman Hall was the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe Employee Christmas Party for all employees & their spouses.  The FSST Christmas Party was hosted by the FSST Executive Council with the assistance of the  Party Planning Committee – Deb Wakeman & Julie Stephens.  The Eastman Hall was decorated in a traditional Christmas theme with Christmas trees along every table.  (more...)

Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center Provides Thanksgiving Dinner

Dakota Language Preservation Project Santee Sioux Nation Oyate Immersion Program

A group of 12 from the Santee Sioux Nation of Nebraska came to Flandreau on Wednesday, November 4th for a demonstration of their Dakota Language Immersion program.  There were 7 students:  Holli Keeble, Linda Whipple, Lorene Beaudette, Terry Remick, and Crystal Coffman, and 5 staff members: Wyatt Thomas- Director of the Dakota Center of Excellence Instructor, Mary Johnson - Media Specialist / Librarian, Redwing Thomas - Dakota Language, Ardis Badmaccosin - Dean of Academics, Richard Lundy - Chair of Native American Studies. (more...)

Sanford Children's Clinic Promoters Visit Royal River Casino

On November 7th Royal River Casino and the FSST Executive Committee hosted visitors from Las Vegas that were in Sioux Falls for the purposes of considering the possibility of Las Vegas as a site for a pediatric clinic, and perhaps some project surrounding sports medicine.  (more...)

38 Sioux Uprisers Hanged 268 Others, Granted Reprieves by Lincoln, Watch from Log Prison

               

Thirty-eight Indians and mixed bloods were hanged simultaneously at 10 am today at Mankato, judged of guilty of crimes committed during the Sioux outbreak in August and September.

Remaining imprisoned are 268 others, sentenced to death earlier by a military commission but reprieved by President Abraham Lincoln.  They watched the execution through chinks between the logs of their prison building.

The condemned prisoners marched in a single file from the prison covered with muslin caps, their hands lashed tightly before them. (more..)

Tribal Members Celebrate 19th Anniversary of Casino

 

Royal River Casino celebrated its 19th anniversary of being the first Tribe in South Dakota to open a casino/gaming business. The Flandreau Santee Sioux tribal members were treated to an evening of “wining, dining and entertainment.” On Sunday, October 18th, from 5pm to 7pm tribal members were treated to an anniversary party in the Royal Room at Royal River Casino.

Dakota Language Preservation Observed at Santee, Nebraska

                        

On Tuesday. October 27th, a group of eight people from Flandreau traveled to Niobrara, Nebraska to observe the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska's Dakota Language Immersion Class.  The program is called "Isanti Dakota Nation in partnership with the Nebraska Indian Community College.

Office of Diversity - South Dakota State University

Friday, October 9th, eight students and three staff members from South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, had narrated tours of the Tribal offices and Tribal programs. Myrna Weston, tribal elder, gave the students and staff a historical overview of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.

Kevin Costner at Royal River Casino for Friendship Ceremony

                  

 

Sunday, September 20th Academy Award winner actor Kevin Costner was scheduled for a brief visit to the Royal River Casino. Costner was in South Dakota to commemorate the 20th anniversary of “Dances with Wolves” for the Aberdeen Film Festival and to promote the Northern Route for Tourism which is an effort to get thousands of tourists that travel to eastern South Dakota for tourist attractions to get interested in what the northern half of the state has to offer, such as Native American sites, museums, prairie scenery, trails, landmarks and other attractions.
