On Friday, August 26th, at Eastman Hall, the family, relatives and friends of Clifford Allen, hosted a Memorial for their brother, uncle, cousin and friend. The memorial was from 5pm to 7pm. Clifford’s sisters, sister-in-laws and cousins prepared a huge feast featuring some of Clifford’s favorite foods. Clifford was a great cook and his specialty was cooking taniga (tripe) and posole (hominy) soup.
Tom Allen, Jr. gave the blessing before the meal. The drum group was Buffalo Lake Drum group which were all local friends and relatives of Clifford’s: Phillip Allen, Chris Barse, Devin Drapeau, Schyler Early, Branden Kills Spotted, Kenneth Burshiem and Lindsey Bird. Tom Allen, Jr., a nephew, also was the emcee/host for the memorial. Richard Allen, Jr., nephew, told “Clifford” stories and his experience Major Redwing and he had getting Clifford’s request to have his ashes put in San Francisco Bay last fall.
The family had a huge give away and everyone that attended received gifts of star quilts, blankets, household items, etc. The guests were guided by Tom Allen to do a Round Dance and carrying one of their gifts to thank Clifford’s family for their meal, social time and gifts.
The Memorial for Clifford certainly commemorated the life of Clifford and kept the memory of him alive all year through. Some of the guests who are not Dakotas said it was a beautiful way to honor a loved one and they were happy they were invited to attend.-Editor
