The SMSC released its annual Donation Report, Indian Gaming: Working for Indian People and Minnesota for 2004 which is a 24 page report detailing the donations that SMSC made within the last year, which totaled to $10,278,792.
The SMSC made donations to 15 tribal nations 5 of which are in Minnesota, educational and youth programs, and other charitable organizations. Some of these donations will be listed below.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe received $113,700 for trucks and road equipment for several districts on the Pine Ridge Reservation. An additional $10,000 went to the tribal government for propane tanks which they gave out to tribal members who needed them.
Santee Sioux Nation received $1,000,000 for its economic development; some of its projects include land purchase, tribal programs, a business incubator building and community improvements.
The Grand Portage Band of Chippewa received $1,000,000 for a new modern trading post which will house a convenience store, fuel dispensers, post office, gift shop, restaurant, and a service garage for auto repair and maintenance.
The Cheyenne River Sioux tribe received $6,000 to establish suicide prevention and grief programs for youth. Over a two-year period there were 26 suicides and an average of 1-2 attempts per day.
Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe received a donation of $500,000 for well drilling equipment which will save them the contracting costs of having 75 water wells drilled per year.
Lower Brule Sioux tribe received $166,922 for a buffalo ranch, popcorn farm, and a visitor's center. The SMSC also donated $3500 for their wellness program.
The Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe of Fort Totten received $416,000 for a housing relocation project for tribal families. This project will move a total of 70 housing units from Minot Air Force Base to the reservation for use in the tribal housing program.
The SMSC gave $5,000 to the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate for unmet medical needs for elderly tribal members such as medicines not covered by insurance or the IHS.
The Lower Sioux Community received $1,000,000 for a children’s Youth Center, a community wellness program with a gymnasium, basketball court, computer lab, and facilities for after school tutoring, GED classes, and activities. It will also contain a multi-purpose room for wakes, funerals, and meetings.
Red Lake Band of Chippewa donated $500,000 for St. Mary’s School, the only all Native American Catholic grade school in the state of Minnesota which has been in operation for 115 years.
Upper Sioux Community, received $1,000,000 for economic development including fiber optic cabling and other information technology related expenses for converting the former casino building into a tribal government center; revolving loan fund; sewer/water/road infrastructure development programs and tribal government activities.
Yankton Sioux Tribe received $1.2 million. A million of the monies were for economic development and improvements at the Fort Randall Casino; $100,000 was for a youth education and activities program through the Yankton Sioux Housing authority; and $100,000 was for a diabetes integrated prevention and management program.
The Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwe has been provided assistance in the funding of a nursing home on the Turtle Mountain reservation, SMSC has donated $118,640 for this project.
The Indian Child Welfare Law Center in Minneapolis received $20,000. ICWLC provides services and training throughout the state to protect the rights of tribes and tribal children.
The Porcupine Clinic Health Board has received a $50,000 donation for a dialysis unit on the Pine Ridge reservation. The Porcupine clinic provides health services for the Porcupine, South Dakota Indian community.
The Upper Midwest American Indian Center (UMAIC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, received a donation $100,000 for general operating support and for an HIV/AIDS prevention program.
Pathways to Spirit received a donation of $20,000. Pathways to Spirit moves donated mobile homes from Colorado to the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota to provide housing for tribal elders.
