Marcella Rose Schumacher
Born: January 20, 1925

Journeyed to the Spirit World

January 31, 2007

Marcella was born January 20, 1925, at Flandreau, SD to Howard and Nina (Allen) Kitto. Marcella attended school at Flandreau Public, Pipestone Indian School and graduated from the Flandreau Indian School. Marcella attended Haskell Institute at Lawrence, KS, where she received a business degree.

While attending school, she worked at a munitions plant near Lawrence and then worked as a secretary for the BIA in Chicago. Marcella married Richard Schumacher in Henderson, KY, on July 8, 1947, and they lived in Evanston, IL, where Dick was an Assistant Fire Chief. He retired in 1978 and they moved to Flandreau in 1991 where they managed the Tribal Motel until 1993. They have continued to make their home in Flandreau. Marcella was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe.(Pictured to the right: Marcella Schumacher "undated school photo")
Marcella is survived by her husband, Richard; five children, William, Flandreau, Bonnie (Marco) Stegich, Skokie, IL, Richard George, Jr. (Patricia), Evanston, IL, Bruce, Flandreau, and Marcie Ann (John) Redday, Flandreau; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Sam and William, a sister, Cora Faye and a daughter-in-law, Linda.
