Darlene Grace Allen Bernard
Darlene Grace Allen Bernard “Tate Win” –Wind Woman, Journeyed to the Spirit World on October 17, 2007, at the age of 66 years, 5 months. She was serving on the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Council as Trustee III and was elected in August of 2006.
Darlene was born May 17, 1941, in Pipestone, MN to Raymond and Laverne (Redwing) Allen. She attended Flandreau Public Elementary and Flandreau Public High School. She married Maynard Herrick on May 21, 1958 in Pipestone, MN. Darlene attended college courses at Dakota State University in Madison, SD in the field of counseling. Then she attended Community Health Representative (CHR) training with Indian Health Services and worked with the CHR program at the first Indian Health Services facility in Flandreau, which was at the Flandreau Indian School boy’s dormitory. She worked with Judy Jones and Ms. Blum.
 Darlene married Martin Bernard on December 31st, 1988, in Flandreau. She worked with the CHR program for 27 years until she resigned to serve her term on the FSST Executive Committee as Trustee I from August 1998 to 2000. Darlene was later elected Trustee III on August 9, 2006. Darlene served on the council form many years and was elected Vice-President of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Oyate.
Darlene is survived by her husband Martin; three children, Gina (Dave) Williams, Flandreau, Maynard Herrick, Jr., San Francisco, CA, and Leanna Bernard, Sisseton; nine grandchildren and five great- grandchildren; three sisters, Judy Allen, Bunnie Allen, and Cyndi (Jim) Weddell, all of Flandreau; and four brothers, Tom (Linda) Allen, Flandreau, Pete (Joyce) Allen, Maple Plains, MN, Sam (Delores) Allen and Clifford Allen, both of Flandreau and numerous nieces and nephews. Darlene was preceded in death by her son David, a daughter, Teanna, her parents, Ray and LaVerne, three brothers, Bobby, Richard and Howard; great nephew Marshall Allen and great grandson Royal Blue.
Wake services were held Friday, October 19th to Sunday,  October 21st at Eastman Hall. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 22, at 1:00 p.m. at Eastman Hall. Officiating were John Cloud and Darrell Mireau.

Honorary Bearers were: Vernell & Ernest Wabasha, Shirley & Rod Steiner, Nancy Herrick, Inez & Gary Owen, Terry & Jessie Larson, Jacki & Randy Barse, Dawn Bucher, Annie Garcia, Cyndi Weddell, Judy Allen, LaVonna (Bunnie) Allen, Denise Peterson, Jeanette Allen, Brooki Corcoran, Valerie Oas, Julie Stephens, Amber Allen, Phylomine Houle, Jackie Allen, Erika Hoss, Kevin Bunn, Leonard Johnson, Donna McBride and Christine Payer.
Interment was at the First Presbyterian Cemetery, Flandreau, SD. –Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau-Arrangements.
